What is Chiropractic

Chiropractic is a healthcare profession dedicated to addressing disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems and understanding their impact on overall health. It is particularly effective in treating neuromusculoskeletal issues, such as back pain, neck pain, joint pain, and headaches.

Chiropractors utilize a drug-free, hands-on approach that includes patient examination, diagnosis, and treatment. They possess a broad range of diagnostic skills and are trained to recommend therapeutic exercises, rehabilitative care, as well as provide nutritional and lifestyle guidance.

One of the most common procedures performed by chiropractors is spinal manipulation, often referred to as ‘chiropractic adjustments.’ This technique aims to restore joint mobility by applying controlled force to joints that have become restricted due to tissue injury. Such injuries can result from a single traumatic event, like improperly lifting a heavy object, or from repetitive stress, such as prolonged poor posture. These injuries cause both physical and chemical changes that can lead to inflammation, pain, and reduced function. By adjusting the affected joints, chiropractors can restore mobility, reduce pain and muscle tension, and promote healing.

Chiropractic adjustments are generally well-tolerated, with some patients experiencing mild tenderness or aching afterward, similar to the effects of exercise, which usually resolves within 12 to 48 hours.

In many cases, particularly with conditions like lower back pain, chiropractic care serves as the primary treatment method. Additionally, when other medical conditions are present, chiropractic care can complement traditional medical treatments by addressing the musculoskeletal components of the condition.
